outloud! 21 April

Hey Team!

Hopefully you know about our radio show on WRFL 88.1FM, but if not, get listening! We're on air every Wednesday morning at 8am and do podcast archives to all of our shows. Many thanks to our wonderful board member/ (so many other incredible things), Vince Purcell for making this show as incredible as it is!

We talked about trans visibility on our show this morning and that is a topic I want to spend more time with in the very near future. I promoted the website as a great example of visibility projects that are making a lot of noise right now. I love xxboys because of the fantastic photography and stories featured in the profiles of those who participate. I wish they would come shoot in Lexington! I highly recommend you check out their site and show them some love.

And finally for this morning's post: a few events
- UK Gay-Straight Alliance: Thursday, 7pm in Rm. 357 of the Student Center. We will be having a regular meeting and auditioning students who want to perform in our drag show, Gayla, that's coming up next week.

- Boxes and Walls! Friday and Saturday, 4-7pm in the board rooms across from the Center for Student Involvement in the basement of the Student Center.

- Love-in Picnic! Tuesday, 27 April 10 - 5pm, Student Center free speech area. Come join us for a brown-bag picnic gathering to drown out the hate preachers that will be on our campus from 11-4. Bring an instrument, a sandwich, and/or a friend and let's all gather in love (and because it's nice out!).

-GAYLA 2010! Thursday, 29 April 6-9pm, Small Ballroom UK Student Center. Drag. Food. Glitter. Be there!

Inaugural post with a mission - Exposing a PFOX Conference Coming to Our Community May 22nd

Hello World!

This is the first post from us here at the University of Kentucky's LGBTQQIA resource center, the OUTsource. We are located in the bottom floor of the Student Center across from Student Government and our office hours are 10 -4pm. We always have a helpful volunteer on staff to answer your questions and help you navigate and check-out our collection of LGBTQQIA resources. Come on by!

I write this first post in direct response to an email I received from a fellow activist out of Johnson City, Tennessee.
Greetings LGBT friends,

I am not sure if your organization is aware of an event which is scheduled to take place on May 22nd, 2010 at Church of the Savior in Nicholasville, KY.

The event entitled "Hope Gathering 2010" is being promoted as an event to help people "gain a deeper understanding of Gender Identity Disorder in a Christ centered gathering."

*source: http://www.help4families.com/

This event is being promoted by PFOX, a group which identifies themselves as "a national non-profit organization that supports families, advocates for the ex-gay community, and educates the public on sexual orientation."

I am sending this information to you in the hope that members of groups such as yours might be able to effectively organize a counter event or protest so that the truth may be heard, and not just the propaganda of organizations such as PFOX.

I can't say enough how much I appreciate this tip-off. It inspires me to know that people ARE still watching what is going on in the world and want to have a hand in the way things unfold.

And this is where you come in.
We need to blow the lid off of this event and let PFOX know that we don't want them in our community! Please link your friends back to this blog and send this around as a message. No one should ever be told that they are wrong because of who they are or that they need to change.

Because I care about all people I will be organizing myself and others to write as many letters as possible to every paper in and around Kentucky. Intolerance is not a Kentucky value. What will you do?
